Immune-Boosting Foods

Published by C. under Diet and Nutrition, Energy Edit This

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is good for us.  It gives us energy, and it keeps our immune systems in good shape.  But there are certain foods that are especially good for our immune systems.  When we eat these immunity boosters on a regular basis, we have an easier time avoiding illness.  We can also fight it off more quickly when it does occur.  Here are some of the best immune-boosting foods.

  • Citrus fruits - When it comes to boosting our immune systems, one of the most important vitamins is Vitamin C.  Long hailed as our immune system’s best friend, it is crucial that we get an adequate amount of it each day.  Citrus fruits are the most recognizable food source of Vitamin C, and they have lots of it.  Lemons, oranges, and tangerines are some citrus fruits that are great for our immune systems.
  • Raw vegetables - Vegetables have a number of nutrients that boost our immune systems.  These include Vitamin E and Beta Carotene.  But did you know that vegetables provide far greater benefits when eaten raw?  Cooking tends to leech the nutrients out of them.  If you can’t bear the thought of eating a particular vegetable raw, lightly steaming it will keep most of the nutrients intact.  The best vegetables for our immune systems are dark green and orange ones such as spinach, greens, sweet potatoes and carrots.
  • Nuts and seeds - These make tasty snacks, and they have great nutritional value.  Sunflower seeds and almonds are great sources of Vitamin E.  A daily serving of Brazil nuts gives us more than enough selenium.  And a number of nuts and seeds contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been proven to increase the activity of white blood cells and speed up healing.
  • Water - Water is a drink, not a food, but getting enough of it is very important to our immune systems.  Water cleanses our bodies of impurities, allowing our immune systems to concentrate on fighting off germs.  It is very important, however, to make sure that the water you are drinking is of high quality.  Certain substances that are often found in water can actually be harmful to our immune systems.
  • Herbs - There are a number of herbs that are good for our immune systems.  Some of them, such as garlic, are tasty as seasonings.  Some make a nice tea.  Others do not taste as good, but can be consumed in pill form.  Some of the best herbs for the immune system include the aforementioned garlic, astragalus, goldenseal, and olive leaf extract.

The immune system is crucial to our good health, so it is very important to take good care of it.  By including these foods in your diet on a regular basis, you can help keep your immune system running smoothly.

Colors That Help Relieve Stress And Tension

Published by C. under Energy, Stress Edit This

More and more homeowners are using different color schemes in their homes that reflect their personalities. Depending on the colors you have in your home, they can play a pivotal role in how you feel. Let’s take a look at some basic colors that help relieve tension.

Pink: This color has a soothing and calming effect. Studies have shown that this nurturing color, especially among girls, is often linked to adults who prefer a less passive hue.

Blue: Studies have shown that blue is a relaxing color and one that promotes calm and inner peace. It also provides tranquility. One of the more popular colors, it is favored among men and is also said to reduce blood pressure.

Green: Also emphasizing tranquility, green is nature’s color. It has a calming effect and studies assert it may relieve stress.

Orange: This is a particularly warm color that can also relieve tension. However, some studies suggest that since it is a component of the color red, it can also spark feelings of hostility.

Brown: The feeling of a comfortable and secure existence is part of the color brown’s description. It makes sense since it is also a color associated with nature.

The psychological effects of color has been the subject of much research. For example, studies have shown that red cars cause more accidents than silver cars. If you’ve seen any bullfights on TV, the red cape used to antagonize the bull is red for a reason. Red energizes, may provoke feelings of anger, and increase hostile attitudes.

It is also interesting to note that centuries ago colors were used as a holistic alternative to traditional medicine. Here are some examples of how colors were used to heal: The color yellow was used as purification of the body; the color indigo was used to aid in skin conditions; the color red was used as a stimulant; and the color orange was utilized to elevate one’s energy.

There is a reason why many homes are switching from traditional white to a variety of soft hues. White, in and of itself, may denote purity; but it is also devoid of healing properties that can relieve tension.

All of the colors above have been shown successful in helping to relieve tension. The color palettes of today are more comprehensive in achieving a certain look, while at the same time offering a soothing alternative to relieve tension.

Bee Pollen and Weight Loss

Published by C. under Energy, Weight Loss Edit This

As most of us search for the perfect diet, you may be surprised to learn that bee pollen and weight loss have been linked.

Research has found that bee pollen increases the metabolism, thereby speeding up the rate at which calories are burned. In fact, it is thought that pollen from the honeybee is even more potent as a weight loss alternative. The pollen itself is low in calories, and it contains a substance called lecithin which allows fat to dissolve more readily in the body. In addition, the effect bee pollen has on cholesterol is positive, and can decrease cardiovascular disease as a result.

Another reason why bee pollen is so effective in losing weight is that it suppresses the appetite. Once you have a regular meal, you feel sated and do not require a second portion or snacks later on.

Here is another amazing fact. The amino acid in bee pollen can also increase weight. Hold on, this is not a contradiction. Simply put, there is an amino acid within the bee pollen called phenylalanine. Now what this does is signal to the body whether or not it is being deprived of food or needs food to survive. Amazing, isn’t it?

Bee pollen is also known as an energizer and has a domino effect on the body. The more energized you are, the more you will engage in physical activity, which will result in the loss of more weight.

Experts also note that the reason why some cannot lose weight, or gain weight for that matter, is due to a “chemical imbalance within the body‘s metabolism”. When bee pollen is introduced, therefore, there is a stabilizing effect which can bring the body back into balance and can attribute to either weight loss or weight gain.

Bee pollen is available in capsule form and can be taken in conjunction with a weight loss program. However, it should be stressed again to consult with your doctor before beginning any weight loss program, as well as ascertain if you are allergic to the pollen itself.

Now a word about phenylalanine that should be addressed: This chemical is found in decongestants and appetite suppressants. This should not be taken as a supplement since it can cause severe side effects.

In addition, pregnant women, children, and nursing mothers should not use bee pollen as there is not sufficient data to explain how it would affect this group. Consult with your physician before deciding on any course of dietary supplementation.
